Dean Martin photographed by Sammy Davis, Jr.
When Dean’s son, Dino, died in a 1987 Air National Guard plane crash, Dean was shattered. He was unwilling to work, to socialize, to do anything. Frank Sinatra suffered for his friend and told Sammy, ‘We’ve got to shake him out of this. He needs to get out and work.’ So Frank conceived a concert tour. He sold Dean on the idea and the tour called The Ultimate Event began in Oakland, California. A few cities later, they were in Chicago where Frank noticed Dean onstage weaving and slurring his words drunkenly, not like the usual Dean Martin make-believe drunk. Sinatra was so disappointed and professionally offended that he bawled Dean out publicly. Dean quit the tour and returned to Los Angeles. Liza Minnelli replaced him for the remaining engagements. When Frank dropped the curtain on someone it was as if they no longer existed. Like there was a blank space where they had been standing.   When Dean learned of Frank’s 80th birthday celebration, he called and asked to participate. Frank sent word that he was not welcome. Dean called again but Frank held onto that grudge. Dean died of respiratory failure ten days later and Frank learned that, in fact, Dean had not been drinking that night on tour, but had been medicated for the illness that ultimately killed him. Frank didn’t stop crying for a week.
